Notice on the PMP Exam Changes

The Project Management Institute (PMI) recently announced that content on the Project Management Professional (PMP) Exam will be changing by 30% effective on Aug 31, 2011, based on the Role Delineation Study (RDS) conducted every five to seven years to ensure alignment between credential and the day-to-day work of project managers.

The PMBOK standard has not changed for the exam. The only difference is that the “ Professional & Social Responsibility “ related questions will not be a single domain for the new exam. The questions from this domain will be distributed in the other process groups.

So, the PMP certification requirements are still the same and candidates should continue to prepare with the current PMBOK study guide.

Longtime business relocates as industry booms

Interactive Study Systems/CareerSaver makes room for growth

In a move hallmarked by phenomenal growth, Interactive Study Systems / CareerSaver, has relocated to the Gateway Centre in Pinellas Park, Florida. With thousands of clients and training programs covering all of the major vendors and certifications and nine years in the industry; ISS is expanding their business.

The business quickly outgrew the Largo, Florida location as CareerSaver continued to expand. Quickly realizing that the Largo, Florida location could not handle the expansion; when the opportunity arose for ISS to relocate, the owner, Jason Bortz jumped all over it. The new facility at Gateway Centre in Pinellas Park, Florida more than doubled their existing size with 11,000 square feet of class A, leased office space.

This relocation is a direct result of an increased demand for high quality, self study materials. IT professionals and those just entering the technology arena have an increased awareness of continuing education and certifications and how important they are to career success and security, especially in a tough economy. Demand for qualified and certified IT experts has fueled the training /certification industry, and as a result, there has been an increased need for CareerSaver's affordable and comprehensive training and certification solutions.

This move will be a benefit for the organization and the community. With this relocation Bortz expects to create 75 new jobs over the next six months.

What certification should you get? What path will take you to your career goal?

You are a recent graduate, or perhaps even a professional looking to switch careers. You have enough knowledge of the IT field to know that is the work you want to do, but are still struggling to get started. What is the best certification to get, what will help you get your foot in the door?

As you start moving forward deeper into your career goals, the recommended certifications are going to be very different depending on what area you want to specialize in. Someone who works on virtualization will have different certifications than someone who is going into IT security. However, the basic starting point for just about anyone looking to start on the right foot is CompTIA A+

The CompTIA A+ exam is the basic foundation to build your knowledge and experience off of. Having this certification is typically the starting point for almost every IT professional, with the exception of those who already have extensive experience and can jump ahead to more advanced certs.

From there, you ultimate career goals will begin to shape your certification path.

For example,

If your goal is computer networking, your planned track might be:

CompTIA A+ > CompTIA Network+/ LPIC-1 > CCNA/ MCTS/CompTIA Security+ > CCNP/MCITP: Enterprise Admin > CCIE /MCM

For IT Security, you might consider:

CompTIA A+ > CompTIA Network+ /LPIC-1 > CCNA/ MCTS/ CompTIA Security+ > MCITP/ CISA/CEH > CISM/CISSP

For Project Management, a typically path is:

CompTIA Project+ > CAPM > PMP

As you can see,  the certifications that are right for your career will vary greatly. Use the knowledge, skills and experience you have and acquire along your path to gain the

An Unbiased Look @ Women in IT

Women make up half of the U.S. workforce but represent only 25% of the technology industry. According to the National Center for Women & IT, in 2009, only 25% of U.S IT professionals were women, compared to 36% in 1991. Just 18% of college degrees awarded in computer and information sciences in 2008 went to women, which is less than half compared to 1985. So the amount of women in technology actually appears to be decreasing over time, not increasing.

CareerSaver posed the question on LinedIn, "Why aren't there more women in the IT industry?"

Women_in_it_survey

31% stated that women are not encouraged to enter this field. This finding was mirrored in a Women in Technology report, which stated that "41% of respondents believe that young girls are put off pursuing a career in the technology industry by the sector’s ‘nerdy’ image. Many respondents think that the industry needs to set up more initiatives to inspire and educate young girls about technology. Also, more positive role models could help to dispel the myth that the industry is ‘geeky’."

The leading percentage in our poll with 51% was 'Other', with statements including:

"I point to our K-12 public education systems and the lack of emphasis and/or focus on the teaching AND understanding of math."

"From my point of view, the main reason is the nature of the the IT field and its sub-fields. In our environment, it is very difficult for here/them to work extra working hours, meeting client anywhere, doing long phone call, visiting the site or others which is the most important activities."

"The lack of women in the IT department has nothing to do with ability. I believe the IT industry has been stereotyped and perceived as antisocial. A large percentage of women seem drawn to careers more human interactive and social."

"I don't believe IT is appealing to the average woman. Specifically the areas where you are working isolated for long hours to trouble shoot problems. Perhaps genetically most men prefer introverted work."

So, the next question is:
